BPC-157 and TB-500: Tissue Repair Research

BPC-157 and TB-500 appear together in tissue-repair research often enough that they are commonly supplied as a pair. They are not variants of the same thing — the literature describes distinct mechanisms.

BPC-157

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide corresponding to a partial sequence of body protection compound, a protein identified in human gastric juice. Fifteen amino acids, and notably stable in aqueous solution relative to many peptides.

Preclinical research has examined its relationship to angiogenesis, fibroblast migration and connective tissue healing. Much of the published work involves rodent models of tendon, ligament and gastrointestinal injury.

TB-500

TB-500 is a synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, a naturally occurring actin-sequestering protein found in most mammalian cell types. The fragment corresponds to the region associated with actin binding.

Studies have investigated its role in actin regulation, cell migration and vascular formation. The described mechanism operates at the level of cytoskeletal dynamics rather than the signalling pathways associated with BPC-157.

Why they appear together

The research interest in combining them stems from the difference in mechanism: one associated with angiogenic and fibroblast activity, the other with cell migration and actin regulation. Whether the combination produces effects beyond either alone is a question the literature has not settled.

Regulatory status

Worth stating plainly: BPC-157 is an unapproved drug and appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list under class S0, non-approved substances. It is supplied for laboratory research purposes only.
