How to Verify Peptide Authenticity

Counterfeiting in the peptide market is not usually a matter of empty vials. It is more often underdosing, substitution with a cheaper compound, or genuine product that has been repackaged and can no longer be traced. Here is how to check what you actually received.

Start with the seal

An intact factory seal is the strongest single indicator. It means the vial has not been opened between the production line and your hand. A crimped aluminium seal should be firmly attached and show no tool marks, and the rubber stopper beneath it should be unpunctured.

If a supplier re-vials or relabels product, every downstream verification becomes meaningless, because the chain to the manufacturer is broken.

Read the lot number

The lot number identifies the production run. It should be printed clearly, machine-applied rather than hand-written, and consistent between the vial and any outer packaging.

This number is what makes the next step possible.

Request the matching certificate of analysis

A certificate of analysis is the manufacturer's test record for a specific lot. It typically reports identity confirmation, purity by HPLC, and mass spectrometry data confirming molecular weight.

What to look at in the vial

Lyophilised peptide typically appears as a white to off-white cake or powder. Common signs of a problem include:

  • A collapsed or melted-looking cake, suggesting the product has been through a warm period
  • Visible discolouration — yellow or brown tints
  • Moisture or condensation inside a sealed vial
  • Significantly less material than the stated quantity

None of these alone confirms counterfeiting, but each is worth raising with your supplier.

Third-party testing

For high-value or long-term research, independent verification is the strongest option. Sending a sample to an independent laboratory for HPLC and mass spectrometry gives you data that does not depend on either the supplier or the manufacturer.

The underlying principle

Verification works when it is anchored to something a supplier cannot manufacture: an unbroken seal, a traceable lot number, and documentation tied to that lot. Everything else is assertion.
